We would like to introduce our LEGO© Robotics teams, the Saber Masters Green and White (Challenge), the Robotic Padawans Green and White (Explore) and the Youngling Builders (Discover). Our team is located at Houston Levee Community Center, in Memphis, Tennessee and is open to all students ages 4 to 8th grade from the surrounding communities of Memphis. Our teams participate in the FIRST© (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League, (see more at www.firstinspires.org)
Ages 4 to 1st grade – is where students begin learning STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) concepts and use LEGO© Duplo blocks to begin learning about gears and ramps or experimenting with ramps or a boat and what would float
2nd to 4th grade – builds on those concepts and introduces a basic robot that can be coded using Scratch type Word Blocks. We used the Spike Essential Robot and build a project and decide as a team which part of the project will be motorized. At the end of the season, we participate in an Explore Fair with other teams.
4th to 8th grade – introduces 3 more aspects to the program: Innovation Project, Robot Game and Robot Design. Each year we build a robot to overcome specific challenges set for the year’s Robot Game. We are challenged to design and build a robot and program it to complete numerous missions using the Word Block code or Python. Advisors and mentors from the community help students through the process of designing, fabricating and assembling a robot to best compete in the year’s challenge. They also help students as they work on their innovation project. The innovation project is something that is new technology or improves upon current technology based on the theme for the year. All levels of the program learn the Core Values of Coopertition, Discovery, Innovation, Impact, Inclusion, Teamwork, Fun and Gracious Professionalism
The season begins in August and competitions are in the spring, coinciding with the school calendar. FIRST© LEGO© League promotes STEM learning from preschool age all the way through high school. By the 2023-2024 season, we are hoping to add a FIRST© Tech Challenge level group for high school. To contact us about getting your student signed up click the button below.
Our teams are constantly looking for help, not only financially, but for volunteers with a background in education, engineering, and any other STEM field that wish to advise and mentor our thriving teams. We are also looking for volunteers who want to invest in the lives of students to give them more opportunities to thrive right now and in the future. The students of the HLCC Robotics are confident that with combined financial and volunteer support from dedicated sponsors, the team will fulfill the required registration, material, equipment and travel costs throughout the season.
Sponsorship is an investment in the future of each student and we truly appreciate it. For more information, please contact us:
